A banking or credit undertaking operating license is needed to issue cards or carry out card acquiring in Iceland. See Art. 20 of Act. No. 161/2002.
Banks and savings banks issue cards in Iceland. There are two card acquiring companies in Iceland, Borgun hf. and VALITOR hf.
The majority of credit cards in Iceland are Visa and Master Card.
